Disembark & Fly Home

Farewell to the Viking Orion · Bangkok to San Francisco via Hong Kong

Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Thailand

Final Morning

Disembarkation morning in Bangkok (Laem Chabang). After breakfast aboard the Viking Orion, transfer from the ship to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) for the flight home. The transfer is approximately 90 minutes from port to airport.

The journey home from Bangkok to San Francisco stops in Hong Kong before the long Pacific crossing. The total distance is approximately 8,300 miles. Thanks to crossing the International Date Line eastbound, you "gain" a day — arriving the same calendar date you departed.

Your Aircraft

Boeing 777-300ER · “Triple Seven”

  • ✈The return flight's 777-300ER will burn roughly 130,000 gallons of fuel on the HKG→SFO leg alone.
  • ✈United operates 96 Boeing 777s — the largest 777 fleet of any U.S. carrier.
  • ✈The 777's folding wingtips were designed but never used — the wingspan already fits standard gates.
  • ✈Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) handles over 70 million passengers per year, built on a man-made island.

Long-Haul Flight Facts

  • ◆The HKG→SFO leg is about 6,900 miles and takes roughly 11 hours flying eastbound (faster due to jet stream tailwinds).
  • ◆Jet stream winds over the Pacific can reach 200+ mph, effectively boosting ground speed to over 700 mph.
  • ◆Eastbound Pacific flights are typically 1–3 hours shorter than westbound due to these prevailing winds.
  • ◆The BKK→HKG leg is a quick 2.5 hour hop — only 1,050 miles, about the same as SFO to Seattle and back.

Getting Home: What to Expect

  • ♥After 15 days of travel, your circadian rhythm has adjusted to Asia time. Expect 3–5 days of reverse jet lag upon return.
  • ♥Pro tip: start shifting your sleep schedule 1 hour earlier each night for the last few days of the trip.
  • ♥Melatonin (0.5–3mg) taken at your home bedtime can help your body readjust faster.
  • ♥The first morning back, get outside in sunlight as early as possible — it's the strongest signal to reset your body clock.

Fun Facts

  • ◆You'll cross the International Date Line eastbound — arriving in SFO the same calendar day you left Bangkok.
  • ◆The total round-trip flying distance for this vacation is approximately 21,000 miles — almost the circumference of Earth.
  • ◆You'll have visited 4 countries, 7 ports, and spent 12 nights on the Viking Orion.
